Developmental psychiatry – results of the survey carried out among the attendees of the First Mental Health Congress
The ongoing debate regarding the provision of healthcare and additional support for patients with mental illnesses has continued for many years. Whilst discussing patient dignity and rights, it must not be overlooked that the right to treatment is the most important and basic among them. The First Mental Health Congress, held on May 8, 2017 in Warsaw, was organised to address the current critical state of mental healthcare in Poland. A separate session during the Congress was awarded to the issues associated with the provision of mental healthcare for children and adolescents, with a special survey distributed among its attendees; 54 completed survey questionnaires were returned. Nearly 90% of the respondents were mental healthcare professionals working with paediatric/adolescent patients. The questions asked for opinions regarding various aspects of the current situation of developmental psychiatry in Poland as well as attendee’s reflections on presentations and speeches featured during the session. The majority of the respondents evaluated the recent data concerning the prevalence of mental disorders among children and adolescents as “alarming.” They pointed out the lack of actual access to psychological and psychiatric aid within the public system, and stressed the need for urgent major improvements thereof. Another hot issue was the key role of preventive policies, including work with families. Also, systemic joint efforts of various public authorities, bodies and institutions are necessary to address the crisis, particularly effective collaboration between the medical and educational community. As a positive trend, the respondents listed the recent grassroots movement joining various social and professional groups to work together on possible solutions.
